Burns

Management of burns at the track

Remove the patient from the flames / heat as soon as safe.

Remember to keep an extinguisher with you in your van

The main aim will be to run the burn under cold water for 20 mins

Grab water from anyone , usually people should have water for washing bikes etc (ask for help) - do not use the jet wash , water should be pouring over the burn (rather than being fired at it)

if there is no water on site, tell 999 as they may then send a fire truck as well (they contain a lot of water ) even if the fire is now out

Burns on the motocross track can be from petrol during Refuelling or when the bike is on its side after a crash with fuel leaking out. (know how to turn off fuel switch)

They can be from touching hot surfaces after riding

They can from Electric bikes batteries / Generator etc

or simply after the Moto whilst having a Barbeque

Standard first aid is

Run cold water over the burn for at least 20 mins

Give pain killers (paracetamol / Ibuprofen)

after 20 mins of cold running water if emergency services still not on scene,  cover the burn with strips of cling film

Gel blankets can help with analgesia

You will need medical help if its a large burn or in a dangerous site or if it's very painful

When calling for medical help a description of the burn area / size of burn area, colour of skin / presence of blisters and the actual cause of the burn will be helpful

Burns to the Face and Neck are worrying from an immediate risk to the airway, you must describe this to the 999 dispatcher

We have a small gel burns dressing as part of Cuts, scrapes and grazes kit
